(Thankfully, you can deactivate this in the game’s settings.) Worst of all, the cuff - whose painful, groan-worthy dialogue has been skewered across the internet - can speak through the controller’s speaker, which is technically a feature, if an unwanted one. During Forspoken’s many parkour sequences, the controller vibrates with varying intensity at every step, almost like you can feel Frey’s footsteps emanate through the controller’s powder-snow-colored plastic. When Frey wields her fire sword, you can feel the right trigger tense as she winds up a swing, then loosen when she releases it, then tense again when the weapon connects with an enemy. To date, few big-budget games have fully taken advantage of the PS5’s DualSense gamepad and its impressive haptic capabilities. I’m less impressed by incremental improvements in graphics than I am by advancements in other areas - stuff like blisteringly fast loading speeds or unique controller features. Once you’ve achieved the goal of photorealism, as so many big-budget games have these days, you can’t really get more photorealistic. (Both of those times were calculated based on an average of five separate loading tests.) Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the only game I can think of that hits the same benchmarks.įor the past few years, we’ve been in an era of diminishing returns in terms of visual fidelity. You can fast travel to any unlocked location in the game’s world in, I kid you not, 1.68 seconds. In Forspoken, on PS5 at least, you can cold boot - the time it takes to go from starting up a game to getting full control of your character - in less than 12 seconds. Image: Luminous Productions/Square Enix via Polygon Forspoken is one of the few games I’ve played that makes good on those remarks. In March 2020, PS5 lead system architect Mark Cerny claimed the then-forthcoming console could essentially eliminate loading times. Still, I’ve seen some minor blemishes - blurry hair, clipped objects, and other hiccups that don’t impact gameplay but are nonetheless unmissable.īut better fidelity isn’t the improvement promised by this console generation. I’ve been playing on PS5 and have mostly stuck with the performance-focused setting, since Forspoken’s combat and movement all but require a stable 60 fps to understand what’s happening on screen. Like many modern games, Forspoken allows you to choose between two visual modes: quality (which caps the frame rate at 30 frames per second to provide sharper graphics) or performance (which allows for higher frame rates at the expense of visual fidelity). (You’re, uh, better off not asking.) Forspoken is a technically demanding game: Particle effects clutter the screen at all times and its open-world map is so vast you can’t view the whole thing at once, even if you zoom all the way out.Īs Grayson Morley noted in his review for Polygon, yes, Forspoken has some performance issues. Out Tuesday on PS5 and Windows PC, Forspoken casts you as Frey Holland, a young New Yorker whisked off to a high fantasy world by a talking golden bracelet. But the result of all that computational horsepower is this: Square Enix’s action-RPG is among a small class of PlayStation 5 games that truly feel like PlayStation 5 games. Much has been spoken about Forspoken’s potential performance issues, what with its massive file size and the fact that, on PC, it demands more RAM than a Dodge. To some extent this is intentional, as it creates the solid horror atmosphere the game is known for, but it also stems from very poor communication, which I can say is SS2's biggest flaw. System Shock 2 isn't a lot of fun when you don't know what you're doing, and at the start you don't know what you're doing. Most importantly, the game was now a hell of a lot more engaging. It now suddenly made sense why the game's soundtrack was pulse-pumping techno music and not a more subtle ambient score a-la Thief. The game is a constant fight for survival, and this means running, dodging, and thinking on the fly. I was expecting a slow, tense game with a lot of sneaking and careful decision making, and there are certainly moments of that peppered throughout, but what SS2 really is is one giant adrenaline rush. It was at this moment I realized that System Shock 2 was not at all what I expected, and I loved it for that. It turned out to be a lot easier to run away from my problems rather than dealing with them head-on, and the thrill of running like a headless chicken with seven insta-kill enemies on your tail is impossible to describe. The Cargo Bay forced me to step outside my wrench whacking-based comfort zone and take advantage of the other resources, most notably movement. If I can say one good thing about the Cargo Bay, it's that it made me stronger. However, with enough persistence and a lot of quicksaving, I managed to get through with my skin still firmly attached to my flesh, and once I did, the game really started to open up. Needless to say, this area took a LOT of trial-and-error to get through, so much so that I almost gave up on the game because of it. I built my character around psionic abilities, and at that point I had no weapon skills, meaning my only ranged attack was a piddly little ice ball that did nothing against anything more threatening than a security camera. The security drones were impossible to avoid, kamikaze C-3PO's were everywhere, and I had almost nothing to work with. The Cargo Bay was one of the most brutal difficulty spikes I've ever had to content with in a videogame. Eventually, I manged to make some headway and get a grasp on the basic mechanics, but then I got to the Cargo Bay. This is where I gave up last time, but I took a deep breath and kept trying. I had barely learned what the buttons did and I was already being thrown into the deep end. I had no idea what was going on, every corner I turned had an enemy around it, I triggered every alarm and had no idea what my objective even was. I finally booted up System Shock 2, got through the intro and actually played the real game for more than 5 minutes. I wanted something deep and challenging that I could sink my teeth into, and with the long, plentiful hours of summer vacation stretching before me, I finally had to opportunity to tame the beast. I was coming off a long reunion with console games, specifically Nintendo, and was starting to tire of simple, shallow fun. It's been at the top of my bucket list for years, and I always tried to psychologically manipulate myself into playing it, but to no avail. I turned it on for a half-hour once, but was too overwhelmed and confused to continue. I had heard horror stories of how complex this game was, and how you could screw yourself and be unable to progress if you used your resources poorly. I had intended to play SS2 for a long, long time, but never got around to it, mainly out of fear. I bought this game ages ago, knowing that it was the same breed of late 90's early 2000's immersive sim as Thief 2 and Deus Ex, games that I love dearly. System Shock 2 has been a game that's been on my mind for a very long time. OK, so before I continue, let me just once again warn everyone that there are spoilers in this post, don't continue if you don't want to be spoiled. A touching line, uttered by Gus as he lay dying. What we didn’t put up with back then was doddlin’ service, and as you can see, we still don’t put up with it.”Īs they rode away, Woodrow tells Gus he’s lucky he didn’t get thrown in jail and Gus says, “Ain’t much of a crime, whackin’ a surly bartender.” If you care to turn around, you will see what we looked like when we was younger and the people around her wanted to make us senators. Gus explains: “Besides a whiskey, I think we will require a little respect. The bartender, upon insulting Gus and Call, gets his nose broken when Gus slams his face into the oak bar. No 5. The San Antonio bar scene has several great lines together, so I decided to count them as one quote. You ride with the outlaw, you die with the outlaw. Jake pleads his case but Gus has little sympathy. No 6. This quote punctuates the scene when Jake Spoon must be hanged along with the murdering horse thieves he has thrown in with. Gus says: “Woodrow, you just don’t ever get the point – ‘It’s not dyin’ I’m talkin’ about, it’s livin’.” No 7. Gus gets exasperated with Woodrow because Woodrow, to Gus’s way of thinking, is being dense. Gus says: “Yesterday’s gone, we can’t get it back.” But he does assure him that if he ever runs into Blue Duck again, he will kill him for him. July is naturally distraught, blaming himself, saying he should have stayed with them. No 8. Gus finds July Johnson burying his son, and Jenny and Rosco. No 9. Not long before Gus goes guns blazing into Blue Duck’s camp to save Lorie, he says, “They don’t know it, but the wrath of the Lord is about to descend on ‘em.” He says, “I won’t say I did and I won’t say I didn’t, but I will say that a man who wouldn’t cheat for a poke don’t want one bad enough.” No 10. Right after Gus has cut the cards with Lorie and she accuses him of cheating. No 11. When the boys seem a little shocked by Gus’, shall we say, manly appetites, he says: “What’s good for me may not be good for the weak minded.” Woodrow says: “I guess this’ll teach me to be careful about what I promise in the future.” Woodrow has just buried Gus and puts up the grave marker made of the famous Hat Creek Cattle Company sign. I do have data on my side, based on feedback from a popular Facebook page devoted to “Lonesome Dove.” From that page I have been able to tabulate the most popular quotes or excerpts from the miniseries: I know it is a delicate business it is holy ground.īut the list I’m about to share is not just my opinion. I cannot resist the challenge of making a list. But I have never let lack of wisdom stop me. If I were wise, I would just say any of a hundred quotes could be someone’s number one, and leave it at that. Since I am, like many Texans, an amateur expert on “ Lonesome Dove ,” people often ask me what I figure are the most loved quotes from the miniseries. Spoiler alert! In case you’ve been under a rock in Ogallala for the last three decades, this story contains spoilers for “Lonesome Dove.” Peter also has to come to terms with the guilt he still holds over his uncle's death, and that his best friend wants to kill him. Even if it feels sour in today's world, it surely wasn't back in 2004. The very idea of holding in your true feelings to "save the ones closest to you" feels like it comes straight out of decades of Spider-Man lore. As frustrating as it is to see him try and navigate Mary Jane's mind without telling her how he really feels, it's an issue that Peter has always had. Spider-Man is no longer getting bullied in high school, but that didn't remiss him from dealing with deep personal problems as a growing man. Which brings me to why this film and really Spider-Man in general have an impact on audiences so heavily, his problems. It's really just your typical scientist gone mad idea, but juxtaposed with Peter's struggling personal life, it plays extremely well. Known now as one of the greatest superhero villains of all time, Molina stands out because of the way he's written as well as his charismatically tragic performance. We get introduced to a few new characters this time around, and of course none more prevalent than Doc Ock, played by Alfred Molina. What I really love about this film is how well it balances out screen time. Thrilling, surprising, and poignant, Spider-Man 2 showed that you don't always have to play it safe with our favorite web-slinger, there's so much more underneath the skin to address. But this film stood for something more, which is quite often the fault of most MCU movies in this era. Raimi's direction is tight but it's also not as sharp as you may remember it. Similarly as dated as the first Spider-Man film is, Spider-Man 2 isn't the easiest re-watch. Complicating matters are his best friend's (James Franco) hatred for Spider-Man and his true love's (Kirsten Dunst) sudden engagement to another man. Meanwhile, Spidey's alter ego, Peter Parker, faces fading powers and self-doubt. Doc Ock blames Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) for the accident and seeks revenge. Octopus, a cyborg with deadly metal tentacles. Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina) is transformed into Dr. When a failed nuclear fusion experiment results in an explosion that kills his wife, Dr. Supported OS: Windows 11 / Windows 10 / Windows 8. As a consequence, all remaining officers were rather inexperienced, not formed properly or too scared for fear of reprisals, blindly following orders to the letter, never taking any personal initiative until official approval by Moscow. Almost three quarters of the most capable officers of all ranks were wiped out or exiled in Siberian camps, as well as engineers. But, starting in 1936, Stalin ordered a series of “great purges”, out of fear of a military coup. Before 1936, the Red Army displayed brilliant and innovative armored tactics, well trained crews and experienced officers. In 1939, the USSR had the biggest armored force in the world, numerically superior to all western powers combined. Success was visible each year in the Red Square, showing new tank models, with most of the development inspired by western technology. He ultimately succeeded, with brutal efficiency, while also turning the country into a police state and military camp in the process. After his death in January 1924, Stalin took his place and, after years of forced agrarian reforms, tried in the 1930s to raise the USSR to the level of the western industries. Despite some successes, White Russians (supported by Western Powers) were ultimately crushed by the Bolsheviks.Ī new regime, more radical, was now held in place by Lenin. At the end of the First World War, a new conflict was already emerging in Russia, the Civil War of 1919-1921. In October, an uprising in St Petersburg led to the overthrowing of the Tsar, and the rise, before the amazed and ashamed eyes of western nations, of the first communist regime ever. Despite the fact that communists were most active on the front, it was only after the arrival of Lenin, thanks to a special operation by the Germans, that the revolt spread.
